What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a prosthetic that is permanently fixed to the top of an existing tooth. Dentists commonly use crowns to cover fillings, restore fractured teeth, or cover discolored or damaged teeth. Crowns can be made of either precious metals or porcelain to match visible teeth.
What Are Tooth Bridges?
Tooth bridges are used to fill in gaps left by missing teeth. Tooth bridges literally bridge the gap by affixing ‘anchors’ to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the opening. The bridge is then formed to look and function exactly like a real tooth. Like crowns, bridges can be made of porcelain or ceramic that is shaded to match the color of your existing teeth.
What Should You Expect From Dental Implant Procedures?
For both dental crowns and bridges, the procedure usually requires two separate trips to the dentist. On the first trip, the tooth or teeth are assessed to make sure they can support a crown and then filed down in preparation. Once the area is prepared to receive the dental implants, the dentist will take a mold of your teeth. That mold is sent to a lab where the final implant is fabricated. During the second visit, the permanent implant is fastened using a specially formulated dental adhesive.
